Health Coach Tip of the Week: 3 Ways to Find More Happiness Right Now

I LOVE sharing health and wellness tips based on my education and my mistakes and successes from 20+ years of living a healthy lifestyle.

Happiness is one of those things that we often take for granted.

Like the air we breathe, it surrounds us, but we don’t always notice it.

We can’t really see happiness, but we know when it’s there and when it’s not. Wouldn’t it be great if we can notice it more when it’s there…

And happiness has been proven to improve our health, productivity, relationships, and even our lifespan! So why not make today the day that you start looking for those moments of joy/happiness in your life?

I’ve always been a pretty positive and happy person. I am going to tell you something personal about myself. I lost my dad and my sister within a year and a half. This is still pretty raw. It’s been less than a year since I lost my sis. For me, this incredible loss has given me the gift of life all over again. I have found deeper meaning in being alive and being happy because of the loss. Deep grief takes you within the depths of your heart and your soul.

This just about sums it up:

I am alive. I am going to cry. But I am going to be so incredibly happy because I am… alive.

Here are 3 easy ways to find more happiness in your day and your life:

Start with the basics. Your body needs the right nutrients to function properly. Eating healthy can contribute to feeling better in general, which can lend to a better overall mood.

Aim for less processed foods and sugary drinks and more nutrient-dense whole foods. Think dark leafy greens, nuts and seeds, whole grains, fruits, and colorful veggies. Make sure you get plenty of sleep, exercise, and water daily.

Make time for fun! There’s no need to wait for vacations or special occasions. Fun can happen every day if you let it! Try taking up a new hobby or creating more opportunities for time with friends and family.

Make a list of new things you want to try and do one of those things every week. Document the journey and write about how it made you feel.

Here are a few ideas:

Visit a new town, try painting, drawing or pottery making. How about finding a nature trail that you have never hiked? Over the summer I visited many towns I had never been to and visited shops in my area that I passed over previously. These small things brought me so much joy! The novelty of doing something new can truly boost your mood.

Don’t forget about self-care. This means taking time out of each day to do something nice for yourself. Whether it’s a bath with candles or a walk in nature, make sure that those things don’t get pushed aside by other responsibilities. You must come first.

Here are some quick ideas:

  • Make a bucket list
  • Do something on your bucket list (for example, visit a new town)
  • Watch a movie from your childhood
  • Have a solo picnic, outside or in your living room
  • Make a vision board

Making time for yourself is one of the most important acts of self-care.
